Lake Victoria, also known as Victoria Nyanza in the Bantu language, is a huge lake located in east central Africa along the equator and borders the 3 countries of:  Kenya with 6% of the total area 4,100 square kilometers(1,600 square miles), Uganda with 45% of the total area, 31,000 square kilometers(12,000 square miles), and Tanzania with 49% of the total area 33,700 square kilometers(13,000 square miles)

Some interesting facts about Lake Victoria:

• It is Africa’s largest lake and has a surface area of 68,800 square kilometers (26,600 square miles).
• It is the largest tropical lake in the world.
• It is the world’s second largest freshwater lake measured by surface area, after Lake Superior in North America.
• This body of water was named after the late Queen Victoria of Great Britain.
• Lake Victoria is about 400,000 years old.
• The average depth is 40 metres (130 feet) with the deepest point being 84 metres (276 feet).
• Approximately 80% of the lake’s water comes from rain. The other 20% comes from small streams flowing into the lake.
• Its most important inflows are on the Kenyan part of the lake: Nzoia(257 kilometers), Yala, Sio, Sondu Miriu, Nyando, Migori, and Mogusi. All these Kenyan rivers contribute with far more water to the lake than the biggest tributary, the Kagera River, which flows into the lake on its western side.
• The Kagera River is the largest river that flows into the lake.
• Geological studies have shown that the lake has dried up completely a few times in the past. The last time was approximately 17,300 years ago.
• Two rivers flow out of the lake. They are the White Nile (called the “Victoria Nile” where it leaves the lake), and the Katonga River.

Principal town on the Kenyan side is Kisumu City, Kenya’s third largest town.
